Canada recalls more frozen beef burgers

Published: Feb. 21, 2013 at 12:55 AM

OTTAWA, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Canadian officials and Canada Safeway Ltd. warn not to eat The Gourmet Meat Shoppe and The Butcher's Cut brands of frozen beef burgers due to possible E. coli.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said the recall was the result of E. coli O157:H7 product testing by the agency. The CFIA is currently conducting a food safety investigation at the producing facility to determine if any additional products might be affected.

The recalled beef burgers include Gourmet Meat Shoppe Big and Juicy Burger and the Gourmet Meat Shoppe Prime Rib Burger with a best before date of Aug. 14 of this year. Also recalled were Butcher's Cut Pure Beef Patties sold in packages of 10, 20 and 40 also with a best buy date of Aug. 14.

Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 might not look or smell spoiled and consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses, health officials said.

Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die, officials said.
