Private Cloud Hosting Provider ScaleMatrix ... - My Best Web Hosting

Chelmsford, MA (PRWEB) May 09, 2012
Arbor Networks, Inc., a leading provider of security and network management solutions for enterprise and service provider networks, today announced that ScaleMatrix, a global leader in Private Cloud Hosting and Colocation, has selected Arbors Peakflow SP platform, the industrys leading network-wide infrastructure security and traffic-monitoring platform.
According to a recent report from Infonetics Research titled DDoS Prevention Appliance Market Outlook, Arbor Networks was cited as the dominant leader for DDoS prevention overall, with a 75.4% market share in the carrier transport and wired broadband market segment, versus 8.8% for the next competitor.
Headquartered in San Diego, CA, ScaleMatrix is a rapidly growing provider of colocation, managed services and private cloud hosting solutions. Customers include leading finance, healthcare, and gaming organizations. Arbor Networks works with hosting providers around the world and understands that the issue of availability is paramount. Hosting providers often have a higher risk of DDoS attacks than other online businesses because hosting providers, in effect, aggregate the risk of all their customers. An attack on one customer can affect others and potentially the entire hosting operation because of the heavy reliance on shared infrastructure. The overall impact of a DDoS attack is a function of the time it takes to detect the attack, the time needed to mitigate it and the extent of service degradation both before and after mitigation.
Security concerns are the number one impediment to businesses looking to leverage the benefits of hosted infrastructure. Companies need absolute confidence that data and applications are going to be secure and available, always. To make that happen for our customers, we have turned to the world leader in availability protection, Arbor Networks, said Mark Ortenzi, ScaleMatrix chief executive officer.
ScaleMatrix is a rapidly growing, innovative provider of a wide variety of services, from colocation to VPN to Infrastructure, Software, Platform and Compliance as a Service. Underpinning all of these is availability. These services must be available on demand. Arbor Networks has been focused on the denial-of service issue for more than a decade. Arbors Peakflow SP platform provides availability protection for the vast majority of the worlds service and hosting providers in operation today, said Colin Doherty, Arbor Networks president.
Integrated DDoS Detection & MitigationScaleMatrixs deployment of the Peakflow SP platform ensures that DDoS attacks are identified and mitigated before they get to customer premises. ScaleMatrix is using Arbors Peakflow SP platform to monitor customer access points at the edge of their infrastructure, in addition to constantly monitoring the entire Internet, looking for attacks that could disrupt or impact the availability of customer services. When Peakflow SP identifies an attack, customer traffic is diverted to the Arbor Threat Management System where it is scrubbed, and attack traffic surgically removed, while legitimate business traffic is passed through to the customer. Arbor is delivering an integrated solution that identifies and surgically removes network and application-layer attacks without interrupting the flow of legitimate traffic. This means that customer-facing services remain available while ScaleMatrix actively mitigates attacks.
Botnet protection via the ATLAS Intelligence Feed A new feature within the Peakflow platform is the ATLAS Intelligence Feed (AIF) which delivers deep DDoS signatures in real-time to keep networks protected against hundreds of botnet-fueled DDoS attack toolsets and their variants. This unique feed includes geo-location data and automates the identification of attacks against infrastructure and services from known botnets while ensuring that updates for new threats are automatically delivered without software upgrades. The ATLAS Intelligence Feed enables ScaleMatrix to directly benefit from the depth and breadth of Arbors research team.
The Arbor Security Engineering & Response Team (ASERT) is a recognized industry expert when it comes to Internet threat analysis. ASERTs primary focus is on botnets, which account for a majority of the DDoS attacks on the Internet today. ASERT has unique visibility into DDoS botnets because of its ATLAS infrastructure, which combines a darknet sensor network with traffic data from more than 100 service provider customers around the world. This enormous dataset enables ASERT to develop a unique, globally-scoped view of malicious traffic traversing backbone networks that form the Internet?s core. This insight is critical, as botnets are constantly changing and updating to thwart detection.

"It's just a challenge to balance privacy, family, and work, but I'm ready," she added. "For me, getting married does not mean we should be limited to a predefined plan. Rather, it's an opening to explore new things."

(AP) ? Bono will present Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi with Amnesty International's highest honor when she visits Dublin next month as part of her first international tour in 24 years, the U2 singer and other organizers of an Irish tribute concert announced Wednesday.

Suu Kyi is scheduled to visit Dublin on June 18, a day after collecting her Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway. Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel in 1991, and Amnesty's Ambassador of Conscience award in 2009. She was unable to claim either award in person until now because she was under house arrest for 15 of the past 24 years and, even when free, afraid to leave Myanmar in case the country's military junta barred her return.

Bono devoted a series of U2's 2009 concerts to Suu Kyi, demanding her release from house arrest, and unveiled the Amnesty award at one Dublin concert that year. He said the June 18 event would be the first time he's ever met the 66-year-old pro-democracy activist.

"It's so rare to see grace trump military might, and when it happens we should make the most joyful noise we can," Bono said in a prepared statement. "Aung San Suu Kyi's grace and courage have tilted a wobbly world further in the direction of democracy. We all feel we know her, but it will be such a thrill to meet her in person."

Suu Kyi was elected to Parliament in Myanmar, also known as Burma, last month; took her seat May 2; and launched an international tour Tuesday starting in neighboring Thailand. She's also scheduled to address both houses of the British Parliament during her European tour next month.

She is expected to visit Dublin solely to be guest of honor at the concert, called Electric Burma.

Bill Shipsey, an Amnesty official organizing the concert, said others taking part would be actress Vanessa Redgrave, the Riverdance troupe, and folk-rock singer Damien Rice.

Bob Geldof, like Bono an Irish rocker-turned-humanitarian, also will be involved in the concert. Geldof praised Suu Kyi as a "heroine of dignity, integrity, courage and steely moral vigor (who) lost her freedom and her family in order to gain a nation. Ireland is ennobled by her visit."

(AP) ? Victoria Azarenka was back to her top-ranked self at the French Open on Wednesday.

The Australian Open champion from Belarus easily advanced to the third round at Roland Garros by beating Dinah Pfizenmaier of Germany 6-1, 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

In the first round, Azarenka struggled early before winning 12 of the final 14 games to advance. She committed 60 unforced errors in that opening match, but brought that number down to only 11 on Wednesday.

Azarenka reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last year, matching her best performance at the clay-court Grand Slam.

U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur also advanced, beating Irina Falconi of the United States 6-1, 6-4.

Later Wednesday, top-ranked Novak Djokovic was playing Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia, and 2009 champion Roger Federer was scheduled to face Adrian Ungur of Romania. In the women's tournament, No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland was to play Venus Williams in the last match on Chatrier.

On Tuesday, Serena Williams showed that, even after 13 Grand Slam championships and dozens of other titles, she is capable of throwing away a big lead.

Williams led 5-1 in the second-set tiebreaker and was two points from victory nine times but still lost to Virginie Razzano of France 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 ? the first time she has ever lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament.

"I definitely was nervous. I'm always a little nervous in every match I play, which I think is a little bit healthy," said the fifth-seeded Williams, who had been 46-0 in the first round of majors. "I was definitely a little nervous."

Williams entered the tournament with a 17-0 record on clay this year. And it looked like No. 18 was in the bag late in the second set.

But Razzano won six straight points to take the set and then won five straight games in the third.

"I just felt I couldn't get a ball in play," Williams said. "You know, when I did, I just felt like I was hitting late and, I mean, how can you hit late on a clay court? It was kind of odd."

Defending men's champion Rafael Nadal had no such trouble, starting his quest for a record seventh French Open title by beating Simone Bolelli of Italy 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Maria Sharapova had an even easier time, scoring a "double bagel" in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Alexandra Cadantu of Romania.

"I feel like with every year I have improved," Sharapova said, "and I enjoy it much more."

Greenland's loss of ice mass during the last 10 years is unusually high compared to last 50 years

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? Loss through melting and iceberg calving during the last 10 years is unusually high compared to the last 50 years

The Greenland ice sheet continues to lose mass and thus contributes at about 0.7 millimeters per year to the currently observed sea level change of about 3 mm per year. This trend increases each year by a further 0.07 millimeters per year. The pattern and temporal nature of loss is complex. The mass loss is largest in southwest and northwest Greenland; the respective contributions of melting, iceberg calving and fluctuations in snow accumulation differing considerably.

This result has been published by an international research group led by the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in the latest issue of Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 1 June 2012. The result was made possible by a new comparison of three different types of satellite observations: measurements of the change in gravity by changes in ice mass with the satellite pair GRACE, height variation with the laser altimeter on the NASA satellite ICESat and determination of the difference between the accumulation of regional atmospheric models and the glacier discharge, as measured by satellite radar data.

For the first time and for each region, the researchers could determine with unprecedented precision which percentage melting, iceberg calving and fluctuations in rainfall have on the current mass loss. "Such an increase in mass loss in the northwest after 2005 is partly due to heavy snowfall in the years before", says GFZ scientist Ingo Sasgen, head of the study. "The previous mass gain was reduced in subsequent years. Similarly in eastern Greenland: In the years 2008 and 2009 there was even a mass increase". As the researchers were able to show, this was not due to decreased glacier velocities, but because of two winters with very heavy snowfall. Meanwhile, the loss of ice mass continues here. For all studied regions the melting and calving periods between 2002 and 2011 are extraordinarily high compared to those of the last five decades.

The work was created in the framework of the Helmholtz Climate Initiative REKLIMof the Helmholtz Association and the EU project ice2sea. Due to the study, the researchers can get a little closer to understanding the current developments of the Greenland ice sheet. Ingo Sasgen: "We now know very well how calving glaciers and melting contribute to the current mass balance, and when regional trends are largely caused by rainfall variations. And we also know where our measurements must be improved." One such area is north-western Greenland, where the comparison of data indicates an abrupt increase in the calving rate, which was detected by the radar data inadequately. The REKLIM/ice2sea scientists want to find out what causes this increase and if it has a continuous or episodic character. A necessary prerequisite is a sufficiently long time series of measurements that is to be created by the continued precise gravity measurements in the context of the new satellite mission GRACE-FO (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment ? Follow On).

(AP) ? Outside the crumbling elementary school, goats feed on trash strewn across the front yard. Inside, the ceiling is rotting, toilets don't work and students scrunch hip-to-hip behind narrow desks.

Millions of dollars in international aid to build and repair Iraq's dilapidated schools have for years gone unspent. Now, Iraq's government risks losing the funding as the World Bank weighs whether some of it would be better used elsewhere.

The dilemma is one that echoes across the international aid community ? whether to continue financing a government with vast oil resources and a $100 billion annual budget or divert the assistance to needier nations. It also reflects growing frustration over the bureaucratic hurdles and contracting problems that have kept the money from being used.

The spending delays have left buildings like the scruffy al-Min elementary school in the former insurgent stronghold of Baqouba, 35 miles (60 kilometers) northeast of Baghdad, in limbo. It's one of thousands of schools across Iraq that desperately need money for repair.

"The building looks like a prison, not a school," said headmaster Abdul-Karim Mohammed Sabti. "This is not an appropriate atmosphere for learning."

The education aid is a slice of $1.3 billion in grants and loans the World Bank and its donor nations have given Iraq since 2004 to fund efforts ranging from labor and welfare programs to providing emergency health services and protecting the environment. Initially, the money was intended to help rebuild the country after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein. But the bank maintained the assistance as it became clear the country desperately needed help as it faced years of violence.

More than one-third of the overall assistance ? about $469 million ? has yet to be spent and the World Bank must decide soon whether to extend a deadline for several of the programs to close by the end of June, or face losing grants to rebuild schools.

"When we talk with the government, when we talk to the primary stakeholders in the country, we try to explain to them that it is a pity that this money is just sitting where it is and it is not being utilized," said Marie-Helene Bricknell, the World Bank's special representative for Iraq.

Some of the money may have to be given back and distributed to the world's poorest counties if Iraq continues to sit on it, she said.

"It may difficult for us to argue (to keep) it if Africa needs the money, or if there is another food crisis in the world," Bricknell said. "Given the austerity around the world, it may be very difficult."

But World Bank officials in Baghdad also acknowledged the Iraqi government faced tremendous hurdles in trying to carry out the projects. There was no parliament when the first tranche of funding was provided, and the government was barely functional in the years the nation teetered on the brink in civil war.

The projects have picked up since Iraq's new government was seated in late 2010, but bureaucracy and contracting problems have stunted progress.

The World Bank is the latest foreign donor to be frustrated by Iraq's lax use of reconstruction aid. Billions of U.S. taxpayer funds have been wasted on projects to rebuild Iraq since the 2003 invasion. Auditors and prosecutors say much of the money has been siphoned away in corrupt contracts.

U.S. funding for Iraq is also dropping dramatically following the departure of American troops in December. Congress is considering cutting aid to Iraq by 77 percent and slashing what was initially touted as a $1 billion program for Iraqi police that was to be the centerpiece if the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad's efforts to continue training security forces.

In 2005, the World Bank began giving Iraq an additional $508 million in special loans that have little to no interest to try to speed up the development projects. The loans are normally given to the world's poorest countries, nearly half of which are in Africa.

Iraq is not considered a low-income country by the World Bank and normally would not be eligible for the funds. But an exception was made as Iraq struggled to recover from upheaval. A quarter of Iraq's population of 31 million lives in poverty, and 15 percent are unemployed, according to U.S. data compiled by the Central Intelligence Agency between 2008 and 2010.

Iraqi schools provide a stark example of the problem. Less than half of the $204 million earmarked for education programs has been spent.

Baghdad has asked for more time to spend about $16 million that's left from grants issued in October 2004 to rebuild schools. The Bank has signaled it may extend the June 30 deadline for the grant by another year.

With the roughly $44 million that's been spent so far, Iraq's education ministry has built 37 new schools nationwide and upgraded 133 old ones. Thirteen more schools are under construction and are expected to be completed by June 2013. Another 30 schools were built in Iraq's southern marshlands between 2006 and 2009 under a different World Bank program that cost $5.2 million.

All the 37 new schools were finished over the last 18 months, said senior Education Ministry official Saad Ibrahim Abdul Rahim, who is the agency's head liaison to the World Bank. He blamed the yearslong delay on bureaucratic snarls, a slow cash-flow to contractors and a lack of available land in populated areas upon which to build.

But last year, the ministry won approval from the prime minister's cabinet to build schools on land that belonged to other government agencies, and progress was made.

More than 6 million students attend Iraq's 15,000 public schools. Rahim said at least 5,000 more schools are needed to ease severe overcrowding.

Another $100 million was given to Iraq as an emergency education loan to ease crowding and update the curriculum in Iraq's schools. The project began in November 2005. Since then, the government has spent only $11 million and has three times asked for the loan to be extended in order to keep the money. It currently expires in June 2013.

There was initial optimism when the World Bank reconstruction program in Iraq began in 2004, but that vanished as the country spiraled into a cycle of violence with sectarian fighting and an insurgency that killed tens of thousands of people.

"After the collapse of the Saddam regime, there was a strong feeling that Iraq was going to grow and build a lot of projects," Rahim said. "But a year later there was a lot of sectarian conflict, and a lot of problems that caused a huge delay to all of the projects, in all of the ministries, for the reconstruction of Iraq."

Rahim was confident the deadlines would be met as violence ebbs and Iraq edges toward stability.

The Education Ministry spent $6.9 million of the loan funding last year ? more than six times of what it spent in 2010. By comparison, the ministry spent $19,800 from the loan fund in 2008.

"We are on track now and the project is going ahead, and there are no huge challenges or any big obstacles to slow or detail it," Rahim said.

Overall, Iraq had spent nearly $839 million of the $1.3 billion in World Bank grants and loans as of March 31, the latest data available. That money has helped create cell phone networks, improve drinking water for 600,000 people, rebuild and restock hospital emergency rooms, and train dozens of doctors and nurses across Iraq, according to the World Bank.

It has also paid for several studies to strengthen Iraq's government, reduce poverty and provide forecasts for the oil and gas industry through 2030 ? and any spinoff businesses that can create jobs and generate money.

And it has put 80 million textbooks in the hands of students whose numbers are growing every day. Half of Iraq's population is under 18, according to the United Nations, forcing schools to teach classes in morning and afternoon shifts to accommodate all the students.

In Iraq's northeast Diyala province alone, 381,000 students are enrolled in schools, said local education director Jaafar Moween al-Zarkushy.

Of 870 schools in Diyala, 65 were destroyed in sectarian fighting since 2003, al-Zarkushy said. Another 110 schools are about to collapse, and 17 more have been deemed inadequate because they are made out of mud.

"All students need a place to go to be taught," al-Zarkushy said forlornly. "The signs are not encouraging."

New Housing Trends Cater to Baby Boomers - Homes MSP Real ...

MP900401993The Baby Boomer generation has been affecting change since they were born, and it continues as they move into retirement age. More sophisticated in their housing wants and desires than previous generations, many are preparing for their next phase of life by selling their their family homes and moving on to new experiences... or re-designing their homes to accommodate their retirement lifestyle.

The trend for Baby Boomers and?first-time homebuyers alike is to?look for small, smart homes in walkable neighborhoods. Some of the features they are looking for? are similar,?and they?are having an impact on new housing trends.

Some features the National Association of Home Builders?is seeing?Baby Boomers?are looking for include...

  • Home offices - many Boomers are continuing to work as they retire, but often in a different capacity... maybe as consultants or starting businesses of their own which they run from home
  • Tech/media centers - many in the Boomer generation are tech-savvy, and want amenities such as WI-FI, media centers, remote control lighting and security features
  • Wider doors and hallways - Boomers are thinking ahead about aging in place in their new homes... wider doors and hallways make it easier to move?in furniture now, and will accommodate wheelchairs if needed on a temporary or permanent basis in the future
  • Better lighting/big windows - as we age we tend to need more light; in addition to bigger windows for more natural light (and better views as well!), they are adding more lights such as under cabinets and in stairwells, along with multiple switches and dimmer controls
  • Main floor bedroom and bath - more than 40% of new homes now have master suites on the main level, up 15% from only a decade ago; the bedrooms are also bigger, with walk-in closets,?separate tub and shower and dual sinks
  • Easy to maintain exteriors and landscaping - many Boomers are looking for relief from yard work, painting and other landscaping chores and choose to buy in a townhome or condo community where that is taken care of for you; those choosing single family homes often opt for maintenance free exteriors, smaller lawns and low maintenance landscaping... or flower beds?with easy access?for the garden enthusiast
  • Flex space - this kind of space that can be adapted for use as a guest room, office, hobby room, library as needs change?is becoming prevalent for all age groups as the trend?moves to smaller smaller, smarter spaces... reminds me of 1950's ramblers where the 'third' bedroom was often this flexible kind of space

Sleep Apnea Can Lead to Cancer | Men's Health News

young woman trying to shut out the sound of her husband snoring

Look familiar?

Don?t get mad when your girlfriend kicks you out of bed for snoring. Get help?it might save your life.

Snoring is the main symptom of sleep apnea, a disorder in which your breathing becomes shallow or even stops for a while during the night. People with severe sleep apnea are almost five times as likely to die of cancer than those who breathe easy while they sleep, according to a new study presented last week at the American Thoracic Society conference. The study, which tracked 1,500 people for 22 years, found that mild or moderate snoring also increases your risk of cancer death. (To live to see your great-grandkids, follow these 50 Tips to Live Longer.)

Sleep apnea reduces the oxygen level in your blood; to avoid suffocating, tumors grow new blood vessels, says study author F. Javier Nieto, M.P.H., M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. These extra veins and arteries help existing tumors grow faster and give cancer cells more opportunities to spread through your bloodstream to new parts of your body.

It?s not yet clear whether sleep apnea increases your risk of getting cancer or just worsens existing cases, and more research is needed to confirm the results. But snoring is cause for concern either way?leading to accidents, depression, high blood pressure, and heart disease. If you snore and are sleepy during the day, check with your doctor, especially if you?re carrying a few extra pounds (they increase your sleep apnea risk). Other signs of sleep apnea include grumpiness, forgetfulness, and headaches that are hard to shake. (If you?re battling other aches and pains, click her for The Real Reasons Why Your Body Hurts.)

In the meantime, sleeping on your side instead of your back can help some mild cases of sleep apnea. Try a device like the Bumper Belt (www.antisnoreshirt.com; $108) or make one yourself by putting tennis balls in a tube sock and sewing them to the back of a T-shirt to keep you on your side.

In Iowa, Obama on the offensive against Romney

He criticized the GOP nominee for distorting the truth and said he wasn't prepared to be President.

By Ken Thomas and Tomas Beaumont,?The Associated Press / May 24, 2012

President Barack Obama delivered his harshest rebuttal yet to rival Mitt Romney on Thursday, dismissing his challenger's claims as "a cowpie of distortions" as he sought to rekindle the all-but-faded Iowa magic that launched him in 2008. Escalating his criticism of Romney's background as a venture capitalist, Obama said it wasn't adequate preparation for the presidency.

"There may be value for that kind of experience, but it's not in the White House," Obama said.

The speech, to a cheering Iowa crowd of about 2,500 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, represented a new intensity for Obama's campaign as Romney begins to hit his stride carrying the Republican standard. It came as Iowa, soured by the direction of the nation and its economy, has drifted away from Obama since his 2008 caucus victory over Hillary Rodham Clinton made him the Democratic front-runner.

While Obama carried the state in the general election by a comfortable margin that year, polls this year have shown voters narrowly preferring Romney, who plans to wage his own major effort in Iowa.

Obama pointedly chose the same turf where Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, once declared that corporations are people. Obama said Romney would roll back regulations and return to policies that he said helped create the recession and would increase government deficits.

Last week, Romney said Obama had created "a prairie fire of debt." On Thursday, Obama said Romney's tax plan is "like trying to put out a prairie fire with some gasoline."

In a statement issued after the speech, Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said: "A president who broke his promise to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term has no standing when it comes to fiscal responsibility."

Obama's visit to Iowa underscored his vulnerability with working-class voters and his effort to identify with the middle class.

Earlier, in blue-collar Newton, Iowa, once the prosperous headquarters of Maytag appliances, Obama visited a wind-turbine plant to push his alternative energy agenda and delivered a message that could as well have applied to all of Iowa. "Yeah, we're facing tough times, but we're getting through them, we're getting though them together," he said.

While offering only six of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, how Iowa voters ultimately judge Obama is expected to be an important factor in the race.

"Last time it was a lot more exciting. It was a new thing," said Nancy Bobo, a Des Moines Obama volunteer and one of his earliest Iowa backers in 2008. "Today, we're all just very serious."

Obama was visiting a former Maytag Corp. appliance plant in Newton, a town devastated by the plant's closing in 2005. The plant now houses TPI Composites, a wind-turbine blade manufacturer.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, has made the struggling economy the centerpiece of his campaign. But Obama can point to comparatively low 5.1 percent unemployment in Iowa, where stable financial services and strong agriculture sectors buoyed the economy while manufacturing has struggled to rebound.

Romney had made the comment about corporations as he argued against raising taxes as a way of shoring up Social Security and Medicare. Members of the audience interrupted, calling for increased taxes on corporations, and Romney responded: "Corporations are people, my friend. ... Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people."

The comment has been used by opponents to characterize Romney, a former private equity firm executive, as more comfortable in the boardroom than the shop floor.

Obama's campaign has emphasized episodes in which Romney's former firm closed plants and laid off workers, and has aired a stinging TV ad on the subject in Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Obama himself has struggled to attract blue-collar voters, keys to winning struggling swing working-class regions such as southeast Ohio, western Pennsylvania and rural Iowa. Newton is the seat of Jasper County, Iowa, where unemployment was 7.1 percent in April, higher than Iowa's average but down sharply from last winter.

While Iowa is known for its first-in-the-nation caucuses, it also is a coveted general election state, despite its small electoral total. Democrat Al Gore carried the state by less than a percentage point in 2000, followed by Republican George W. Bush's 2-point victory in 2004.

The state shows a candidate's ability to win support in the heartland. It could help Romney in his effort to peel back states Obama won in 2008, or help Obama put Romney away.

Obama has already spent more than $2.6 million on advertising, a pace as aggressive as in any other battleground state. He's been a regular visitor, and was making his second trip in a month.

Yet the president's approval rating here has been stuck below 50 percent for over two years, softened in part by criticism from Republicans campaigning for Iowa's leadoff caucuses.

Republican Terry Branstad took back the governorship easily from Democrat Chet Culver in 2010, as the GOP won back the state House and came close in the Senate.

Polls show Iowans also have become increasingly bothered by federal spending, an issue Romney stoked in Des Moines last week in a visit where he promised to shrink the deficit.

Iowans, many of whom met Obama in the 2008 campaign, also are disappointed by what they hoped would be a transcendent presidency, said J. Ann Selzer, the longtime director of The Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll.

"You hear disaffection. You hear them say, 'This isn't what I paid for,'" Selzer said. "The guy they sent there to recast things wasn't able to do it."

Obama made his latest trip to a swing state while his campaign manager, in Washington, privately updated Senate Democrats on the state of the race. Officials said Jim Messina told lawmakers the president has several possible paths to collecting the 270 electoral votes he needs for victory in November.

But Messina also noted that Romney, the Republican Party and allied super PACs are likely to have a great deal of money to spend. Obama vastly outspent Republican John McCain in winning the White House four years ago, an advantage that Democrats appear unlikely to command in 2012.

Romney senses the opening.

He, too, has cultivated an Iowa network. Indeed, he campaigned aggressively for the 2008 caucuses during his narrowly losing bid for the state's delegates. And his campaign has begun running television ads in Iowa.

Romney and the Republican National Committee have hired state directors and are hiring staff to run a dozen or more offices planned for Iowa.

While Obama campaigned here, Romney spent Thursday visiting an inner city charter school in west Philadelphia. Romney was to spend the weekend in La Jolla, Calif., with his family.

Jury rules that Google did not infringe upon Oracle's patents ...

lawsuitFor those who might have been following the news, you guys are probably aware that one of the more prominent legal battles currently waged is between Oracle and Google, with the former accusing the latter of copyright infringement pertaining to Google?s Android mobile operating system. Well it looks like that legal battle could be over as the jury has come forward with a decision that ultimately stated that they did not find Google guilty of infringing upon Oracle?s patents.

Prior to this, the jury had found Google guilty of infringing upon Oracle?s copyrights, but they were ultimately unable to arrive at the conclusion as to whether the copyrighted material was covered under ?fair use?. While this is certainly a victory for Google, there are other issues still at large, such as Judge Alsup?s ruling as to whether the SSO of Java?s API can be copyrighted in the first place. Should the judge find that the SSO is not covered by copyright law, Oracle will receive statutory damages from Google for the rangeCheck and test file usage which will cost $150,000 per infringement count. Alternatively if the judge were to rule that the SSO is covered by copyright law, the copyright infringement counts will be bundled together and dealt with in a new trial.

Both Oracle and Google have issued statements with regards to the outcome of the jury?s verdict:

Oracle:

Oracle presented overwhelming evidence at trial that Google knew it would fragment and damage Java. We plan to continue to defend and uphold Java?s core write once run anywhere principle and ensure it is protected for the nine million Java developers and the community that depend on Java compatibility.

Google:

Today?s jury verdict that Android does not infringe Oracle?s patents was a victory not just for Google but the entire Android ecosystem.
