Smartype keyboard keeps your eyes on your work

16 hrs.

ISRAEL - Here in Israel,?Dov Moran is considered a genius. If you look at you keychain and have a USB hard disk hanging from it, Moran is the one who invented it. He was the founder of M-systems that invented the USB flash drive. His company was sold to SanDisk at the end of 2006 for $1.6 billion.

On Wednesday,?Moran introduced his latest gadget, the Smartype, a new computer keyboard that he hopes will change our life in a simple but clever way.

One?hundred?and fifty?years have passed since the first keyboard was introduced, and not much has changed since.?"I invented Smartype since I had my own problem typing," Moran?told reporters. "When I typed, I found myself looking constantly back and forth from the keyboard to the computer screen, checking the spelling and typing language".?

So Moran invented a keyboard that has a built in screen that displays and represents the last line typed, making it possible to keep your eyes looking only at the keyboard. Simple and one of those "why didn?t I think of that?" ideas.

Moran represents a lot of why Israel is called ?the start-up nation." ?He faced huge success, as well as a close encounter with failure. In 2007, Moran?invented Modu, the first Israeli mobile phone company. The concept was to build a tiny and simple phone but at the age of the iPhone no one bothered with small and simple and in 2011 the company ceased to exist. ?I failed with Modu? Moran said. "But you need to fall and bounce back and continue on."

About 100 million keyboards are sold each year worldwide, and Moran told reporters he "will be happy with 10 percent of that." Later this year, U.S. consumers?will have the choice to purchase?Moran?s new Smartype keyboard for $99. Not only does it have a nice sleek design, but it also comes with a set of applications that can display the weather, time and last email.

Republican convention: For GOP women, social issues take a back seat

Cindy McCain, left, listens to a speech by Ann Romney at the Women for Victory breakfast in Tampa, Fla. About a block from the convention was the Woman Up! Pavilion, sponsored by the Young Guns Network, which promotes conservative candidates. (Max Whittaker, The New York Times)

About a block from the Republican National Convention, in a strip mall next to a Hooters restaurant, is the Woman Up! Pavilion, sponsored by the Young Guns Network, a "super PAC" promoting conservative candidates. Its decor is warm and welcoming, with circular banquettes accented by hot-pink carnations and red roses. There is a hair salon offering blowouts, and a gift shop. Cocktails like the "Lady Lemonade" and "Woman-Tini" are offered for $6.

The pavilion holds a one-room women's suffrage museum and offers forums on topics like "Advocacy Means Business: Building Your Organization" and "The Europeanization of the United States."

What is missing from the all-inclusive spot? Any discussion of the social issues ? abortion,

same-sex marriage, insurance coverage for birth control ? that have at times engulfed the Republican nominating contest.

"We don't talk social issues," said Mary Ann Carter, policy director for the Young Guns Network, who manages the pavilion. "We talk about the economy. We talk about health care. We talk about energy."

This refrain was often heard in and around the convention. In dozens of interviews, women at the convention made clear that social issues are now taking a back seat.

Even those who passionately agree (or disagree) with the new conservative party platform ? calling for traditional marriage, public display of the Ten Commandments and a sweeping ban on abortion ? did not seem to want to discuss the subject. (The one exception was Mitt Romney's sister Jane, who Wednesday declared that if Romney is elected president, a ban on abortion is "never going to happen.")

Instead, women at the convention preferred to point to opening night Tuesday, when a parade of Republican women took to the podium, including Ann Romney, who spoke about her family, and Gov. Nikki R. Haley of South Carolina, who preached a gospel of economic empowerment, free of government rules and regulations.

Being visible was one way, Republican women said, to counter the Obama campaign's charge that their party is waging a war on women.

"They're doing the soft love approach," said Sandra Stroman, a convention participant from Chester, S.C. "They're holding up our women in this party and putting those women in front of the cameras, saying, 'Here are our Republican women. Do they look like we have waged war against them?'?"

With the intention of appealing to voters beyond the party's base, many Republican women are simply avoiding the mention of abortion or gay rights because they are seen as too divisive. Some acknowledge playing down their own views as a strategic move. Instead, they want to talk about the economy.

The distancing from social issues is all the more urgent, some conservative women acknowledged, in the aftermath of comments that Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri made two weeks ago, claiming that in cases of "legitimate rape" one need not consider abortion because the female reproductive system shuts itself down.

"Of course it was unhelpful," said Kristen Soltis, a pollster, saying that Democrats have seized the issue to support their contention that Republicans are hostile to women. "I think that because unemployment is so high, Democrats think it's much easier to win over women voters if they talk about these social issues. I think that's a risky gamble for them because I so firmly believe that this will be an election about the economy."

Rocket blasts off, puts NASA radiation belt probes in orbit

Thu Aug 30, 2012 7:43am EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., August 30 - An unmanned Atlas 5 rocket lifted off on Thursday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, placing a pair of heavily shielded NASA science satellites into position to study Earth's radiation belts.

The 190-foot (58-meter) tall rocket, built by United Launch Alliance, blasted off at 4:05 a.m. EDT (0805 GMT), soaring out over the Atlantic Ocean toward an orbit as far as 19,042 miles above the planet's surface.

Riding atop the rocket were the identical twin Radiation Belt Storm Probes, which are expected to spend two years surveying the Van Allen radiation belts, hostile regions that surround Earth and that most other spacecraft try to avoid.

"They're now at home in the Van Allen belts, where they belong," deputy project scientist Nicola Fox told reporters after the launch. "For the science team, the real work now begins."

Named after University of Iowa physicist James Van Allen, the two doughnut-shaped belts of trapped particles were discovered in 1958 by Explorer 1, the first U.S. science satellite. They are held in place by Earth's magnetic field, which traps the electrically charged particles from the sun and deep space.

How the belts form and why they sometimes balloon out is a long-standing mystery.

Understanding the phenomenon is more than scientific curiosity. Every spacecraft orbiting Earth, including the $100 billion International Space Station and its crew, fly through the high-radiation regions, which can degrade solar panels and affect electronics.

"Modern society depends on satellites and other space-based technologies ... making the research and understanding that will come from (the probes) invaluable to building better protected satellites in the future," New Jersey Institute of Technology physicist Lou Lanzerotti said at a pre-launch news conference.

The satellites are expected to spend the coming two years flying in tandem through the heart of the radiation belts. The inner belt begins about 650 miles above Earth and extends to about 8,000 miles, but at times it can dip as low as about 125 miles. The space station flies about 250 miles above the planet.

The outer belt begins at an altitude of about 8,000 miles and extends to about 26,000 miles.

The solar-powered probes, heavily shielded to operate in the radiation belts, are flying in slightly different, highly elliptical orbits that are inclined 10 degrees to the planet's equator, allowing them to periodically lap each other. Science operations are scheduled to begin after a 60-day instrument checkout.

The satellites, built and operated by Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Lab, will fly as close as 100 miles to each one another, and as far as 24,000 miles apart.

The dual measurements are key to understanding how the belts puff out and contract over time and in response to solar activity.

"If you imagine sitting on a life raft in the ocean and you suddenly go down and come up again, you don't know very much about what caused you to go down and come up," Fox said before the launch.

"If you have a friend who is sitting on a life raft a little way away, you can say 'Well, did we both go down and up at the same time?' In which case it's a big-scale feature like a tsunami. Did one of us go down and then the other one? You can really start to look at the global dynamics of what's happening in the radiation belts," Fox said.

United Launch Alliance is a partnership of Lockheed Martin and Boeing. The mission cost $686 million, including the launch vehicle.

96% The Imposter

All Critics (81) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (78) | Rotten (3)

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.

Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.

"The Imposter" becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which may never be known.

This is one creepy mystery.

"The Imposter" initially seems to be a tutorial in identity theft, as well as a cautionary tale about the susceptibility of people who have lost a loved one. But that's not the half of it.

Layton's film joins the top ranks of nonfiction films because he recognizes that in this case no solution could be as engrossing as the questions.

Rather like watching a magician pulling off a trick which your eyes cannot see, The Imposter offers its own strange kind of magic.

The story is astonishing enough on its own, and The Imposter succeeds in enhancing its immediacy and intensity.

As his story unfolds, one gets the uncomfortable sensation that a joke is being played. But on whom?

One of the year's most provocative pictures.

Incredibly well-made and with a story you won't forget, "The Imposter" is one of the better docs of the season.

The Imposter emerges as a brilliantly slippery film that demands brain-stretching consideration. Astonishing, indeed.

It's an astounding story, truly, and Bourdin is the most chillingly sympathetic sociopath: frank, remorseless, matter-of-fact.

British director Bart Layton has only slightly fictionalised this extraordinary story for his documentary, which is told more as a thriller than a statement of hard fact.

"The Imposter" is one of the best films of the year.

Not only is the story riveting, but the film explores huge issues that really get under our skin

The Imposter frequently sends your jaw hurtling to the floor as it tries to understand the great pretender and a family only too willing to accept him as one of their own.

When this film was over, I felt as if I had been holding my breath for 99 minutes. It is pure, delicious suspense.

The mysteries stick with you. In 20 years time, someone will leap up and shout, "Eureka!"

Think of Clint Eastwood's Changeling and multiply by the power of reality.

The month's second mind-blowing doc ... a thinker that deserves the thought.

[The] unbelievable blend of confidence trickery and seemingly wilful blindness is what fascinates most in The Imposter, and raises more tantalising and disturbing questions.

You couldn't make this stuff up - and no one would buy it as fiction. But as a documentary, it's a different matter.

Layton may be making a sophisticated point about the elusive nature of truth but at the same time, it's a point made at the expense of the Barclays.

The year's most fascinating and frightening doc so far, The Imposter delves far beneath the hysterical tabloid headlines.

NASA launches radiation belt storm probes mission

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? NASA's Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP), the first twin-spacecraft mission designed to explore our planet's radiation belts, launched into the predawn skies at 4:05 a.m. EDT Thursday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.

"Scientists will learn in unprecedented detail how the radiation belts are populated with charged particles, what causes them to change and how these processes affect the upper reaches of the atmosphere around Earth," said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate at Headquarters in Washington. "The information collected from these probes will benefit the public by allowing us to better protect our satellites and understand how space weather affects communications and technology on Earth."

The two satellites, each weighing just less than 1,500 pounds, comprise the first dual-spacecraft mission specifically created to investigate this hazardous regions of near-Earth space, known as the radiation belts. These two belts, named for their discoverer, James Van Allen, encircle the planet and are filled with highly charged particles. The belts are affected by solar storms and coronal mass ejections and sometimes swell dramatically. When this occurs, they can pose dangers to communications, GPS satellites and human spaceflight.

"We have never before sent such comprehensive and high-quality instruments to study high radiation regions of space," said Barry Mauk, RBSP project scientist at the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Md. "RBSP was crafted to help us learn more about, and ultimately predict, the response of the radiation belts to solar inputs."

The hardy RBSP satellites will spend the next 2 years looping through every part of both Van Allen belts. By having two spacecraft in different regions of the belts at the same time, scientists finally will be able to gather data from within the belts themselves, learning how they change over space and time. Designers fortified RBSP with special protective plating and rugged electronics to operate and survive within this punishing region of space that other spacecraft avoid. In addition, a space weather broadcast will transmit selected data from those instruments around the clock, giving researchers a check on current conditions near Earth.

"The excitement of seeing the spacecraft in orbit and beginning to perform science measurements is like no other thrill," said Richard Fitzgerald, RBSP project manager at APL. "The entire RBSP team, from across every organization, worked together to produce an amazing pair of spacecraft."

RBSP was lifted into orbit aboard an Atlas V 401 rocket from Space Launch Complex-41, as the rocket's plume lit the dark skies over the Florida coast. The first RBSP spacecraft is scheduled to separate from the Atlas rocket's Centaur booster 1 hour, 18 minutes, 52 seconds after launch. The second RBSP spacecraft is set to follow 12 minutes, 14 seconds later. Mission controllers using APL's 60-foot satellite dish will establish radio contact with each probe immediately after separation.

During the next 60 days, operators will power up all flight systems and science instruments and deploy long antenna booms, two of which are more than 54 yards long. Data about the particles that swirl through the belts, and the fields and waves that transport them, will be gathered by five instrument suites designed and operated by teams at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark; the University of Iowa in Iowa City; University of Minnesota in Minneapolis; and the University of New Hampshire in Durham; and the National Reconnaissance Office in Chantilly, Va. The data will be analyzed by scientists across the nation almost immediately.

RBSP is the second mission in NASA's Living With a Star (LWS) program to explore aspects of the connected sun-Earth system that directly affect life and society. LWS is managed by the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. APL built the RBSP spacecraft and will manage the mission for NASA. NASA's Launch Services Program at Kennedy is responsible for launch management. United Launch Alliance provided the Atlas V launch service.

Meeting The Wine Nazi at a dog-friendly winery | The Jet Set Pets

Lucy-RamsGate Winery dog friendly winery in Sonoma

Lucy relaxes at Ram?s Gate Winery in Sonoma, Calif.

The Soup Nazi episode of?Seinfeld? is one of those hilarious classics that won?t be forgotten anytime soon. Neither will my encounter at a dog-friendly winery with whom I call The Wine Nazi during my recent trip to Sonoma.

I was in the midst of enjoying the perfect day in pet-friendly Sonoma, part of California?s popular wine country. In the morning, I romped around the grounds at The Fairmont Mission Inn & Spa, where I was one of many four-legged guests. At lunch, I perched myself on a wooden bench next to my mommy at the super pet-friendly Sunflower Caff? Espresso & Wine Bar and watched her eat a yummy-smelling lamb burger that she didn?t offer me. Whatever!

And then I went to Ram?s Gate Winery?on the southern edge of Sonoma.?Ram?s Gate boasts that it is a dog-friendly winery but I beg to differ.

When we arrived at the so-called dog-friendly winery, one of the rare wineries where visitors can dine and sip,?I wasn?t surprised to hear that I wouldn?t be allowed in the area where food is served. That is natural as there are laws prohibiting my kind from being around food. A female employee told my mommy that we would have to stay in the lounge area, which was fine with me. And that I wasn?t allowed on the furniture. Again, no problem with me obeying that rule either.

Chic but not so much a dog-friendly winery

Ram?s Gate is super chic and modern. Unlike any winery I?ve ever visited. A wall of windows gives way to a breathtaking view. The lounge?s blazing fireplaces at first seemed out of place considering it was quite warm but which added a nice, homey feel at this dog-friendly winery. The sofas, chairs and tables too were just perfect. Very cool! I gave this dog-friendly winery a paws up, despite its restrictions.

Lucy-Kelly-Ladybug-Rams's Gate dog friendly winery in Sonoma

Kelly has her hands full with Lucy (left) and Ladybug at Ram?s Gate Winery in Sonoma, Calif.

My mommy thought it would be nice for us to take a photo in front of the fireplace at this dog-friendly winery so we did with Ladybug, a Terrier mix I met that day at lunch. Just as my mommy was about to snap a photo of Ladybug and her guardian Cindy in front of the fireplace, a male employee with a thick German accent came over and informed us that dogs are not allowed on the furniture.

Our mommies explained that Ladybug and I were not on the furniture but rather were on our guardians? laps. Didn?t matter. We had to be on the ground. Rules are rules at this dog-friendly winery.

I always feel safe on my mommy?s lap. No one ever steps on me when I?m in her lap. And I don?t care how much I smell from another dog?s scent on her, I would never tinkle in my mommy?s lap either. No reason for me to mark my territory when it?s mine anyway. So what?s the problem with me being in my mommy?s lap or Ladybug being in Cindy?s lap? Who we were hurting??Why not have a seating area dedicated to those with dogs if you?re worried about my kind leaving fur behind instead of banishing us to the floor? Maybe The Wine Nazi thought I would poop on the couch? As if! I have some manners.

In his German accent, he?explained that a few bad eggs at this dog-friendly winery had spoiled it for pooches like me and Ladybug. A dog bit an employee. Some people didn?t pick up their four-legged friends? poop. Something about incidents with kids. (It?s none of my business, but what are kids doing at wineries? They shouldn?t be drinking wine any more than I should be ? and I?m not allowed to drink alcohol.)

Suddenly, I didn?t feel very welcome at this dog-friendly winery. The fun was taken from the visit to the winery so we left. If kids are allowed at wineries then shouldn?t fur babies too? I?m just asking.

I wondered if Ram?s Gate should continue to call itself a dog-friendly winery based on my experience. Before we left, my mommy asked and was told that for the next month or so, Ram?s Gate would continue to welcome dogs. But after that, well who knows.

You?ve been warned, just as I was, by The Wine Nazi.

Binge Eating Overview: An Overview ? The Ranch | Drug Rehab ...

Binge eating disorder is an officially recognized eating disorder characterized by frequent, excessive consumption of food. Unlike people who voluntarily overeat on holidays or other limited occasions, people with the condition feel a compulsion to overeat, and continue their behavior even when they become aware of its negative consequences. Because of the level of food consumption involved, binge eating disorder can lead to a variety of serious or potentially fatal illnesses. What?s more, people with the disorder also sometimes have or develop additional mental health problems. Fortunately, doctors and mental health professionals can treat binge eaters through methods that include medications and psychotherapy.

Binge Eating Basics

Binge eating disorder features an extreme level of calorie intake, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine?s MedlinePlus, and people with the condition can consume anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 calories in a single meal or episode. By comparison, the recommended calorie intake for teenagers and adults ranges from roughly 1,600 to 3,000 for an entire day. However, people with the disorder typically don?t want to be overweight and experience a variety of negative emotions, including guilt and self-loathing, in regard to their behavior.

Unlike people who have the eating disorders anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, binge eaters usually don?t engage in behaviors ? such as vomiting or excessive exercising ? that purge or burn off significant amounts of calories. For this reason, they commonly gain enough weight to classify them as overweight or obese. You can develop binge eating disorder at any age; however, the disorder most commonly appears in teenagers and young adults. Roughly 2 percent of American adults are binge eaters, and the condition is somewhat more common in women than in men.

Binge Eating Causes

No one knows exactly what triggers binge eating disorder. However, the Mayo Clinic reports, researchers have uncovered certain underlying factors that potentially play a role in its onset. They include a family history of eating disorders, genetically inherited chemical imbalances in your brain, current or previous problems with clinical depression, participation in a restrictive diet program, and lack of the coping skills needed to deal with strong or unpleasant emotional states. In addition, people with the disorder often feel estranged from their communities, feel that they lack control in their lives, abuse alcohol or other substances, and make decisions in an impulsive manner.

Signs and Symptoms

Common signs and symptoms of binge eating disorder include eating disproportionately large amounts of food at any one time, eating well past the point of fullness, feeling unable to control your eating habits, eating large amounts of food rapidly, experiencing repeated episodes of significant weight gain and weight loss, purposefully eating your meals alone and eating when you don?t feel hungry. People with binge eating disorder also commonly attach negative feelings to their eating behaviors (including disgust, guilt, shame and/or depression), experience feelings of social isolation, and avoid talking about their feelings regarding food-related issues. While some binge eaters overeat regularly, others diet for limited periods of time or unsuccessfully attempt to reduce their food intake to normal levels. In addition, some binge eaters develop clinically serious symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mood or personality disorders.

Potential Consequences

The weight gain associated with binge eating disorder can lead to the onset of serious, chronic health problems that include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallbladder disease and heart disease. Other problems commonly found in binge eaters include headaches, joint dysfunction, insomnia, muscle pain and alterations in the normal menstrual cycle. In addition, people with binge eating disorder have increased chances of developing some forms of cancer.

Available Treatments

Your doctor can treat binge eating disorder with antidepressant medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), other antidepressant medications called tricyclic antidepressants, or a seizure medication called topiramate (Topomax). None of these drugs were designed to combat binge eating, and no one knows precisely why they produce positive effects. Forms of psychotherapy used to treat the disorder include interpersonal psychotherapy, which focuses on your relationships with other people; cognitive behavioral therapy, which focuses on improving your self-control in stressful situations; and dialectic behavior therapy, which focuses on both new behavioral skills and your relationships with others. Additional techniques used to treat or diminish the effects of binge eating include medically supervised weight-loss programs and participation in established support groups.

Other steps you can take to deal with binge eating disorder include following your established treatment plan as closely as possible, eating a healthy breakfast each day, avoiding self-directed diets, avoiding stockpiling food in your home, seeking the advice of a registered nutritionist, staying physically active, and doing what you can to maintain your relationships and other social outlets.

Hoping for Healthy Seniors Years? Get Fit by 50

It seems like every time you turn around, someone else is espousing the benefits of physical activity and fitness. Here's yet another reason to get moving: Your fitness level at age 50 has a lot to do with both the occurrence and severity of chronic disease in your golden years.

Twenty-Six-Year Study Conclusion

As researchers noted, there is much scientific evidence between fitness and mortality -- the age at which you can expect to expire using parameters of health such as physical fitness. The team of researchers who undertook this study, published Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine , was interested to learn the relationship between fitness and the development of chronic illnesses in later life.

The research team examined data from the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study representing information from healthy, midlife adults. From this data the researchers were able to determine that midlife fitness levels were closely inversely associated with later development of chronic diseases. The greater the level of fitness in middle age, the lower the likelihood of development of chronic illnesses in senior years.

Practical Application of Study Information

Diane E. Bild, MD, MPH, stated succinctly that there are only two true factors involved in fitness: genetics and exercise. Only one of these two factors can be controlled by each individual: exercise. Baby boomers who are interested in maintaining good health throughout their golden years have time to heed the warning implicit in the study's conclusion.

Validity of Study Conclusion

Bild, in a commentary appearing in the Archives of Internal Medicine , also notes that although the researchers findings have value, there are limitations to this kind of study. A cohort study, such as this one was, studies data in retrospect. Bild asserts that clinical studies need to be developed where factors affecting outcome can be better controlled and more representative of the total population. The Cooper Center study, Bild explains, gathered data from participants of whom 98 percent were white, well-educated, and of a middle-to-upper socioeconomic status.

Bottom Line

Even given the limitations of diversity in the Cooper Center study, the conclusion that a relationship exists between fitness in midlife and better health in later life seems reasonable. Fitness at any and all ages has proven advantages, from heart health to mood improvement, which no prudent person should ignore.

Baby boomers, the writing is on the wall. Reading the message isn't going to be enough to make the difference; you're going to have to take action -- the sooner, the better for your future health's sake.

Smack dab in the middle of the baby boomer generation, L.L. Woodard is a proud resident of "The Red Man" state. With what he hopes is an everyman's view of life's concerns both in his state and throughout the nation, Woodard presents facts and opinions based on common-sense solutions.

'iPad Mini' Coming in October, Following a September iPhone Launch [REPORT]

AllThingsD is confirming that Apple will unveil a seven-inch "iPad Mini" in October, following the September launch of the next-generation iPhone.

[More from Mashable: Apple Stock Hits All-Time High After Favorable Verdict]

ATD's John Paczkowski reports the "iPhone 5" and a smaller iPad will premiere at two separate events before the holiday season commences. He cites "several" unnamed sources. The next iPhone will debut at an "as-of-yet unannounced event" on Sept. 12, the report says.

"Only after the next generation iPhone is out the door and on sale will Apple announce the smaller iPad it?s been working on," Paczkowski writes. "That device, which is expected to have a display of less than eight inches, will be uncrated at a second special event, which sources said is currently scheduled for October."

Apple hasn't confirmed any plans.

For months, tech analysts have been debating the market's need for an Apple device that's larger than the iPhone and nearly three inches smaller than the existing 9.7-inch iPad.

Comparing the "iPad Mini" to the classic tablet, some argue it's a bad idea. Experts suggest the medium Apple device would offer consumers an "inferior" experience in terms of web browsing, video streaming, reading and writing. The diminutive iPad would be competing with several other 7-inch tablets on the market including Google's Nexus 7, Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's Nook tablet.

Are you waiting to buy an 7-inch Apple tablet or the next-generation iPhone? Tell us in the comments.

WEST NILE VIRUS ISSUES FOR SENIORS

Aug 25th, 2012 | By Sharon Shaw Elrod MSW EdD | Category: Lifestyle, Health & Fitness

The threat of West Nile Virus is of more concern for seniors that any other population group.? Many experts have said that if you are over 70 and develop symptoms of WNV, go to the hospital immediately.? Senior citizens have less ability to fight the disease, and immediate medical care is necessary to head off potential health issues from developing.

So, Seniors, if you live in a climate that includes mosquitoes in the summer, be sure to learn all you can about protecting yourself from mosquito bites, as well as things you can do to chase those little critters away. Using a good mosquito repellant when you are out doors is one of the best things you can do.? There are many on the market, including some that repel mosquitoes but do not contain pesticides that can harm your body.

Suggestions for Environmental Management

There are some things you can do to protect yourself even further.? This list includes using some natural repellants that some of us may not be aware of.

  • For those seniors still living at home, the best first step is to eliminate standing water wherever you find it around your home or neighborhood.? Mosquitoes breed in standing water and removing the opportunity will keep them from your neighborhood.? Standing water collects in trash cans, barbeque grilles, discarded tires, bird baths (change this every few days if you have a bird bath), and any pots or pails that you leave outdoors.? Keep your lawn mowed and cut down tall weeds.? Bugs of all kinds hide in tall grass.
  • Mosquitoes hate the smell of coffee (brewed), especially if it has been allowed to sit around for a while and get rancid. ? Save your coffee grounds, let them get really smelly for a couple of weeks and add them to standing water wherever you see it; this is for the puddles on the ground that you cannot eliminate.? Be sure not to put it in water where you have fish or other aquatic life.? You can use old smelly coffee as a spray on outdoor furniture and wherever you spend a lot of time outdoors.
  • Marigolds are an old tried and true means for chasing off a lot of bugs and other pests.
  • Some have tried to use dryer softener sheets for chasing bugs away.? It never worked for me, but some friends use them regularly.? Hang them outdoors, particularly around light fixtures that can help dissipate the aroma.
  • Anything aromatic like sage or rosemary or garlic or lemongrass can help deter mosquitoes.? If you have an outdoor fire pit or grill, you can put some of these spices on the fire and keep bugs at bay.
  • Bats are great mosquito killers.? They eat hundreds of mosquitoes every night.? There is a lot of information on the Internet about inviting bats to your neighborhood.? Check it out.

Victory for evolution in Texas

July 22nd, 2011

Pop the champagne corks. The Texas Board of Education has unanimously come down on the side of evolution. In a 14-0* vote, the board today approved scientifically accurate high school biology textbook supplements from established mainstream publishers ? and did not approve the creationist-backed supplements from International Databases, LLC.

"This is a huge victory for Texas students and teachers," said Josh Rosenau, NCSE programs and policy director, who testified at the hearings this week. In his testimony, Rosenau urged the board to approve the supplements ? recommended by a review panel largely composed of scientists and science educators ? without amendments, and to reject International Databases' creationist submission. The board did just that, and asked for only minimal changes to the approved supplements.

Jailed Western Sahara activists stage 48-hour hunger strike

RABAT (Reuters) - Twelve activists from the disputed Western Sahara began a 48-hour hunger strike inside a prison in the Moroccan-controlled city of Laayoune to denounce their detention conditions, fellow activists said.

Morocco's Communication Minister Mustafa el-Khalfi said authorities were not aware of the hunger strike but he strongly denied what the two activists said was a heavy security deployment around Laayoune on the day a U.S. human right group was expected to arrive in the former Spanish colony.

The decades-old dispute over the region's status pits Morocco, offering semi-autonomy to the Western Sahara it considers part of its territory, against the Algeria-backed Sahrawi Polisario Front, which demands self-determination.

Morocco annexed the territory in 1975 after Spanish forces withdrew, and Polisario began a guerrilla war against Moroccan forces until the United Nations brokered a ceasefire in 1991. Attempts to reach a lasting deal since then have foundered due to deep rifts and regional rivalry between Algiers and Rabat.

The 12 have been sentenced to three years in prison for involvement in clashes with Moroccan nationals that killed seven people last year in Dakhla, in the Western Sahara.

The hunger strike coincides with the expected arrival of a delegation from the U.S.-based Robert F. Kennedy Centre for Justice and Human Rights "to assess the human rights situation on the ground", the center said.

The Sahrawi sources said police deployed along Laayoune's main Smara boulevard and also around the house of prominent Sahrawi human right activist Aminatou Haidar.

"There is no siege in Laayoune ... These are baseless allegations. Things are normal and quiet from the information we have gathered in the ground," said Khalfi.

"We want the Kennedy centre to see for themselves the reality of things, the objective, unbiased reality. What we expect of them and other organizations is to see the reality and make an objective and unbiased view of the situation, not only in the Moroccan (controlled) Sahara but also in the camps," he added in reference to Polisario's rear base south of Algeria.

An eyewitness said there was a substantial presence of police in Laayoune but he noted that it has been the same since 2010 when clashes between Moroccan security forces and Sahrawi residents killed 13 people near the same city.

Seeing the Big Picture of the Home Depot... | MyReviewsNow

Seeing the Big Picture of the Home Depot home improvementThe upswing of do-it-yourself has brought about an entirely different way of not only doing home improvement, but doing business. The Home Depot, a large company that sells home improvement and construction supplies was begun in 1978. There were initially only two stores at that time; in 2009, there were stores in every state and an annual revenue of 71 billion dollars.

Why, exactly, has The Home Depot thrived? It has thrived simply because Americans, particularly in the wake of tough economic times, have realized how easy and inexpensive it is to ?do it yourself?. In fact as renovation and construction companies have gone under over the last few years, many people are simply unable to find anyone to help them improve their home or business, and must do it on their own.

Stores like The Home Depot can help people get exactly the materials they need for a huge variety of projects, and the staff has been trained to give real advice for those inexperienced in renovation. Not only can customers find the materials they need, they can find out what products may work best on their specific project. The materials at these stores include basic construction supplies, d?cor, gardening, heavy construction and even greenhouse materials.

In addition to the store business, millions of people each year visit the website for the Home Depot and get products shipped to them. The Home Depot has additional stores dedicated to d?cor, lighting, landscaping and furnishings. This company has branched out yet again by opening a handful of fuel centers around the country that offer gasoline and quick snack items. While it remains to be seen whether or not this, too, will catch on, it is very clear that the Home Depot is here to stay, especially in light of country wide economic woe.

Some people do not go to the Home Depot simply for buying a specific project item, however. Many people actually enjoy wandering around the large greenhouse sections at the stores, and admiring the clever displays in the many different departments. Unfortunately, sometimes this can cause problems, as in the Colorado customer who was accidentally glued to the toilet seat at an area Home Depot. Information regarding the subsequent lawsuit was not available for review. However, despite this type of mishap, this type of store is a great place to get inspiration about how to decorate or furnish a home or business, regardless of your budget or intentions.

2013 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Review

As far as cars go, I've been a Mustang fan since childhood as my father owned a Mach 1 convertible in England during the early '70s. The vehicle was rarer than hen's teeth in the UK back then, and could halt London traffic on occasion. Yes, while most Brits peddled around in Lucas-riddled MGBs and their little Austin Whatchamacallits, I rode shotgun in one of America's greatest ever creations: the muscle-bred Pony car!
Of course since then, we've seen the good, the bad and the downright ugly sport the famous grille mascot. However, I'm pleased to announce that, of late, there's been nothing but thoroughbreds prancing around the blue oval corral; and this statement certainly pertains to the new 2013 Mustang GT convertible.

Yes, I know it still sports a solid rear axle which is perhaps viewed as a tad old-hat nowadays, but in many ways this simply adds to the charm of the vehicle. You see, while others attempt to recreate the old muscle-car flavour using present day platforms, the Mustang is the only one (in my book) that truly feels like the evolution of its granddaddy.

Benefits of Exercise During and After Cancer Treatment

Photo by lululemon athletica, via Flicker

Exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle, so it?s no surprise that it helps patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Oncologists often recommend that their patients undergoing cancer treatment take it easy, but today that advice has significantly changed. According to Ciaran Devane, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, cancer patients would benefit greatly from some level of physical activity in regard to their recovery and long-term health. Macmillan Cancer Support is a UK-based organization that offers medical and financial support for cancer patients, and pushes for better cancer care. Macmillan?s ?Move More? report surveyed 60 studies and over 400 health professionals to show how important exercise is to cancer treatment ? and for reducing the risk of some cancers progressing or coming back. The results of these studies are astounding ? but even more astounding, the repor?

Organizers meet to create $100b climate fund

GENEVA (AP) ? A new global fund on climate change that aims to channel $100 billion a year in aid to poor countries selected officials from South Africa and Australia as its leaders at its first meeting Thursday.

The Green Climate Fund, created as part of a deal struck in December 2011 at the 194-nation climate talks in Durban, South Africa, will be led by Zaheer Fakir, head of international relations for South Africa's environment agency, and Ewen McDonald, deputy head of Australia's international development agency, the fund said in a statement.

It would receive and distribute $100 billion that rich nations have pledged annually by 2020 to help poorer countries adapt to changing climate conditions and to move toward low-carbon economic growth. The commitment to provide those billions in climate aid through the new "green" fund came as part of a hard-fought agreement in Durban that was meant to set a new course for the global fight against climate change for the coming decades.

But the agreement did not specify how that money would be mobilized, and a series of technical decisions on how and where it should be run and even how it could raise those funds were put off for later.

Its 24-member board began by organizing itself, setting rules and hearing offers from six nations that would like to host the fund's operations: Germany, Mexico, Namibia, Poland, South Korea and Switzerland.

Swiss Cabinet member Doris Leuthard, who directs the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications, welcomed the board to Geneva for the fund's inaugural three-day meeting, which runs through Saturday. She also began pressing the Swiss case for serving as the fund's long-range hosts.

The fund was created in addition to the $30 billion in "fast-track financing" for poor countries that rich nations agreed to provide at the December 2009 climate talks in Copenhagen, since the Green Climate Fund is envisioned as the world's biggest financier for helping the developing world mitigate and adapt to climate change from 2020 onwards.

The board's members include a Chinese assistant finance minister, U.S. deputy assistant treasury secretary, Russian deputy chief in the president's office, Danish central banker, Czech deputy finance minister, Bangladeshi environment minister and Pakistani U.N. ambassador.

(AP) ? While U.S. presidential candidates talk tough about what they see as China's unfair trade policies, one fact gets little notice: Chinese companies are investing more than ever in the U.S. and supporting thousands of American jobs.

With two separate billion-dollar deals in a struggling chain of movie theaters and in shale oil and gas, as well as other major ventures in the works, investment from China is set to hit record levels in 2012. Its cash-rich companies have expanded their presence here in the past three years, eager to tap the lucrative American market and U.S. knowhow.

The jobs created don't offset what American politicians and some economists see as the millions of jobs lost because of China's currency policies and the theft of intellectual property. Also, Chinese investment, especially in telecommunications and other sensitive businesses, isn't always welcome.

But the growth in investment underscores how the relationship between the U.S. and China is more complicated than depicted on the campaign trail. Cheap Chinese products have benefited American consumers, and China's massive purchases of Treasury securities have helped finance the U.S. budget deficit. And while Chinese investment in the U.S. is barely off the starting blocks given the size of its economy, some believe it could become a major source for American jobs.

"There's a huge amount of ignorance in the U.S. marketplace of how to take advantage of potential Chinese investment," said Larry Morrissey, independent mayor of Rockford, Ill., a city of 150,000 that hosts three major Chinese companies. While money is tight in the U.S., he said, Chinese firms want to invest and have the funds to do it.

But in the presidential campaign, China seems to attract only negative attention.

"They steal our intellectual property rights. They block access to their markets. They manipulate their currency," Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan told supporters in Ohio last week. He accused President Barack Obama of allowing China to treat him like a "doormat" and vowed Mitt Romney would crack down on China cheating.

Obama, who has sought deeper ties with China, says his administration has nevertheless stepped up trade complaints and announced one in response to Chinese tariffs on U.S. auto exports during a campaign trip to Ohio in July.

But both the administration and the Republican-supporting U.S. Chamber of Commerce are actively seeking Chinese investment. They want to capitalize on the ambitions of state-owned and private Chinese companies to expand from the developing world to developed countries.

The private Rhodium Group, which closely tracks Chinese foreign direct investment, puts the total attracted to the U.S. since 2000 at $20.9 billion. It predicts that Chinese companies could invest between $1 trillion and $2 trillion internationally by 2020 and a significant chunk of that investment could come to the U.S.

"Chinese firms are arriving at the inflection point at which it makes sense for them to be developing more of a commercial presence in the United States and Europe," said Daniel Rosen, partner at the New York-based group.

While China is still far from emulating the outward expansion of Japanese companies into the United States the 1980s, the Japanese experience could be a formative example. Fears then that the U.S. economy might be dominated by Japan proved unfounded. Today, Japanese-affiliated companies employ about 700,000 Americans.

As a strategic and emerging military rival of the U.S., however, China brings with it more baggage. China still restricts foreign investment in much of its own economy. Many of its biggest companies looking to invest abroad are state-controlled.

Cybersecurity is also a major concern because of repeated reports of cyberattacks on Western companies and government departments originating from China. That has dented the prospects for its telecommunications and technology giants.

U.S. lawmakers have often weighed in on the debate. The House Intelligence Committee is investigating Huawei, one of the world's biggest suppliers of telecom gear, and its rival, ZTE, examining their ties to the Chinese government. It is also probing reports that ZTE is supplying surveillance equipment to Iran.

Pin Ni, president of the American arm of the private Wanxiang Group, an auto parts and renewable energy manufacturer that has close to 6,000 employees in the U.S., said negative views of China and political tensions between the two governments deter some companies. Yet in reality, he said, that's little impediment to doing business.

Ni set up Wanxiang America from a home office in Mount Prospect, Ill., in 1994, essentially as a sales outlet for the parent company. It now has 27 manufacturing facilities across 14 states and annual revenues of more than $2 billion and supplies most of the major American auto manufacturers. He said that only about 10 percent of the parts it supplies in the U.S. are now sourced from China.

"Our labor costs are higher (in the U.S.) but our overall costs are lower because it's more efficient here," he said.

Morrissey, the Rockford mayor, said Wanxiang had acquired a struggling auto parts manufacturer in his city. Attracted by the Chinese company's long-term commitment to the U.S., Rockford chose Wanxiang to develop a $12.5 million solar panel manufacturing plant employing 60 people and a large solar power farm as part of the city's strategy to attract more green business.

Two other major Chinese firms have investments in Rockford, including Dalian Machine Tool Group, which acquired Ingersoll Production Systems and employs 100 people. Rockford is also in talks with Wanxiang about plans to modernize the city center.

"A lot of American cities are completely on the sidelines," said Morrissey, who has made several trade missions to China. "I don't see many cities, especially cities of our size, doing what we are doing, of being proactive and looking to exploit the opportunities there are for Chinese investment."

Joy Huang, president of Connect East, which advises mostly Chinese state-owned enterprises on working in the U.S., said companies want to establish their own brand presence here ? something few Chinese firms have achieved, other than appliance-maker Haier and computer-maker Lenovo. She said the main challenge is learning to comply with the many regulations and customizing products for picky American consumers.

Chinese companies are targeting a wide range of industries, also including aerospace, banking, metals processing and plastics. In a sign of those diversifying interests, conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group announced in May it is acquiring cinema chain AMC Entertainment Holdings for $2.6 billion, the biggest Chinese takeover of an American company to date.
