NASA's Kepler telescope is permanently on the lookout for celestial objects of interest, and its latest discovery is a small one. A small planet, to be exact -- in fact, the smallest its encountered during its search. Kepler-37b is a tad larger than our heavenly dance partner, the Moon, and whizzes round a star much like our Sun, with two larger planets in its system for company. NASA's issuing back pats all round, as finding Kepler-37b has highlighted "the precision of the Kepler instrument" (although admittedly, the star's behavior was favorable), and suggests there are many more humble worlds of similar size awaiting our detection. It's unlikely any aliens call Kepler-37b home: it's thought to be rocky, with no atmosphere, and hugs its sun in a 13-day orbit cycle, meaning surface temperature is terribly high. Still, an achievement for Kepler, no doubt, but what we really want it to find is a planet home to beings who can explain the plot-line of Prometheus. We're still a little confused.

10:43 a.m.: The Hawks really seem to want to rid themselves of Smith, but no other team appears willing to bite. That should tell you something.
Smith is a perfectly fine player and an enticing 6-foot-9, super-athletic wing forward, but he tends to fall in love with his shaky jumper and his impressive stats have never translated into much success in the wins department. What?s more, he is due to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and he has told reporters that he fancies himself a maximum contract player.
If Smith wants $20 million or more per year, he is too pricey. But if some team acquired him at the deadline, they probably would feel pressured to give him his money to justify the move ? then regret it for the next five years.
10:35 a.m.: Not quite sure what to make of these Josh Smith-Monta Ellis rumors. One minute, the Hawks and Bucks are talking. The next minute, one side or the other is striking down the rumor. Get used to this sort of back-and-forth in the next five hours.
10:25 a.m.: Fab Melo, we hardly knew you. According to ESPN?s Chris Broussard (I know, I know), the Celtics are dangling rookie center Fab Melo as bait to land a perimeter scorer like Washington?s Jordan Crawford.
Crawford has one year remaining on his rookie contract before he becomes a restricted free agent after next season.
10:12 a.m.: The Maloofs are a menace that needs to be weeded out of the NBA. Fortunately, that time seems to be fast approaching. Unfortunately, it did not appear quickly enough to keep them from ruining their own franchise and, now, their current roster.
The Kings made the inexcusable move of dumping rookie Thomas Robinson, the No. 5 pick in the last draft, along with Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt on Wednesday night. In return, the Kings got Patrick Patterson, Cole Adrich and Toney Douglas, none of whom is anything beyond a role player. Patterson is an effective scorer but in non-existent on the glass or on defense.
Robinson, 21, has been far from a standout so far. He averaged just 4.8 points and 4.7 rebounds in 51 games in Sacramento, but he was a young player on an affordable rookie contract who was worth the project. He was the kind of player a new ownership group could have molded in the organization?s new image. Instead, he is the latest victim of the Maloofs incompetence and awfulness.
8 a.m. ET: Everybody is on the clock. The NBA trade deadline arrives Thursday at 3 p.m. ET, marking the last chance this season for teams to add that last pivotal player to put them over the hump ? or to dump that extra salary or free-agent-to-be before it is too late.
As usual, the run-up to the deadline has featured no shortage of rumors. Some are intriguing. Some are absurd, like the Nets? reported offer of Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and a draft pick for Paul Pierce. Seriously, Billy King? That was the best you could come up with for one of the all-time great Celtics?
There are plenty of more realistic deals to ponder, however. The Hawks really seem to want to move Josh Smith, the power forward who stuffs the box score but has yet to lead Atlanta to any real success. Interest in Smith, as one might expect, is tepid. The Jazz are expected to move either Al Jefferson or Paul Millsap if they can, as both members of Utah?s front line become free agents at the end of the season. A Millsap-Eric Bledsoe swap with the Clippers makes tons of sense for the Jazz, but the Clips would need to be really sure Chris Paul is re-signing this summer before they send away the 23-year-old guard.
A few teams would love to have Dwight Howard, no matter how far below his potential he has played this season. But Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak threw cold water on any Howard trade scenarios by reiterating that the Lakers will not trade the big man this season. Sorry, folks.
Join us throughout the day for updates and analysis for the moves, big and small, that take place right up to the last minute.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Oscar-nominated Israeli documentary has brought little joy to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, the focus of the film's criticism of Israel's policy toward the Palestinians.
Featuring searingly confessional interviews with six former chiefs of the shadowy security service Shin Bet, "The Gatekeepers" portrays the 46-year-old West Bank occupation and Jewish ultranationalism as threats to Israel's survival.
Its run for Sunday's Academy Awards comes at an awkward time for the conservative Netanyahu. He narrowly won an election last month that favored centrist rivals who, echoing world powers, demand he revive long-stalled Palestinian statehood talks.
Usually quick to congratulate Israelis who succeed abroad, Netanyahu has kept mum on "The Gatekeepers", which an aide said he had not seen. Reaction from other officials has been frosty.
Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon said the Shin Bet veterans' interviews, in which they discuss episodes such as the agency-ordered killing of two captured Gazan bus hijackers and a plot by Jewish extremists to blow up a major Muslim shrine in Jerusalem, had been edited "to serve the Palestinian narrative".
"What was presented there was presented in a really one-sided manner, and therefore the film is slanted," Yaalon, a member of Netanyahu's Likud party and a former military chief, told Israel's Army Radio.
Asked about the film during last month's World Economic Forum in Davos, Defence Minister Ehud Barak, the lone centrist in Netanyahu's outgoing coalition, offered tepid praise for its "testament to the fact that in Israel you can talk more freely, perhaps, than in any other place".
SPANNING DIVIDES
Also among the five contenders for the best documentary Oscar is "Five Broken Cameras", a sympathetic account of the Palestinian struggle against land seizures involved in the erection of Israel's West Bank barrier.
"Five Broken Cameras" was partly funded by an Israeli government-run cultural trust and involved an Israeli filmmaker, but its Palestinian director, Emad Burnat, has shunned suggestions that it augurs reconciliation between the sides.
While mostly well-received by Israeli audiences and film critics, "The Gatekeepers" broke little new ground politically. Four of the ex-Shin Bet chiefs had jointly aired similar public criticism against former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in 2003.
But interest has been piqued by the film's slick archive footage and digital reenactments, its international accolades and the fact its interviewees span current ideological divides.
One of them, Avi Dichter, is Israel's civil defence minister and a member of Likud and Netanyahu's inner security cabinet. Another, Yaakov Peri, is a lawmaker in Yesh Atid, the centrist party that was runner-up to Likud in the January 22 ballot.
"When you leave the service (Shin Bet), you become a bit of a leftist," Peri says in the film.
A third interviewee, Ami Ayalon, who once ran for the leadership of the centre-left Labour party, tells director Dror Moreh that Israelis suffer a strategic shortsightedness that could imperil their survival as a democracy.
"We win every battle, but lose the war," Ayalon says.
Moreh told Reuters this month that U.S. President Barack Obama should intervene in the conflict in his second term, comparing Palestinians and Israelis to kindergarten children.
"They need a grown-up to tell them, 'Enough! Israel, Palestine, this is what you need to do, do it.
Dichter, who said this week he had not yet seen the film, said it was "skewed, improper and tendentious" to criticise a serving prime minister, telling Israel's Channel Two television:
"The prime minister sets policy that is good for the State of Israel, not policy that is good for the Oscars."

OTTAWA, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Canadian officials and Canada Safeway Ltd. warn not to eat The Gourmet Meat Shoppe and The Butcher's Cut brands of frozen beef burgers due to possible E. coli.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said the recall was the result of E. coli O157:H7 product testing by the agency. The CFIA is currently conducting a food safety investigation at the producing facility to determine if any additional products might be affected.
The recalled beef burgers include Gourmet Meat Shoppe Big and Juicy Burger and the Gourmet Meat Shoppe Prime Rib Burger with a best before date of Aug. 14 of this year. Also recalled were Butcher's Cut Pure Beef Patties sold in packages of 10, 20 and 40 also with a best buy date of Aug. 14.
Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 might not look or smell spoiled and consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses, health officials said.
Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die, officials said.

TOKYO/HONG KONG | Tue Feb 19, 2013 11:01pm EST
TOKYO/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Japan's government is set to launch the sale of part of its stake in Japan Tobacco (2914.T), a move that hit the company's stock as investors sold ahead of the $10 billion offering.
Shares in the world's third-largest tobacco company tumbled as much as 5.9 percent on Wednesday, after Reuters reported that the sale would launch in the coming days.
The offering, the largest such deal since the U.S. Treasury's $20.7 billion sale of American International Group Inc (AIG.N) shares in September, comes as Japanese equities hover near their highest levels in more than four years.
Japan Tobacco shares were down 3.2 percent at 2,832 yen in late morning, having fallen to a three-week low of 2,752 yen. The sale of a large block of shares usually prompts a fall in the price because it will increase the supply of publicly traded stock in the market.
Banks, including the four underwriters hired to manage the offering, met on Tuesday to iron out details of the deal, sources told Reuters.
Conditions for a sell-down in the government's stake in the $62 billion dollar company have improved, with Japan's Nikkei share average .N225 up nearly 25 percent over the past three months to its highest level since September 2008.
Japan Tobacco shares rose about 21 percent over the same period, part of a broad market rally that began in mid-November after the calling of an early election that put Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in power a month later.
Abe has promised aggressive monetary and fiscal policies to tackle prolonged deflation.
APPETITE FOR BIG OFFERINGS
Japan's large and liquid stock market is used to digesting big offerings, such as the $8.5 billion IPO of Japan Airlines Co Ltd (9201.T) in September and a $2.3 billion follow-on deal by All Nippon Airways Co (9202.T).
Last month U.S. private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP CBS.UL raised about $1.7 billion by selling shares in Japan's Aozora Bank Ltd (8304.T).
Overall, equity issuance in Japan rose 16.8 percent in 2012 from a year earlier to $26.4 billion, driven by large IPOs and a flurry of activity that made it the busiest year for deals since 2008, Thomson Reuters data showed.
But the Japan Tobacco sale would be extraordinary.
The sale process is expected to be helped by both Tokyo's stock market rally of recent months and a promise by the company to buy back $3.1 billion of its shares. <ID: nL3E8FQ4YI>
"At the moment, appetite for Japanese stocks seems to be quiet smart," said a Tokyo trader, who did not want to be named.
JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), Daiwa Securities Group Inc (8601.T), Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) and Mizuho Securities were hired last June as underwriters for the Japan Tobacco offering. Japan's biggest brokerage, Nomura Holdings Inc (8604.T), was not selected as an underwriter after its involvement in an insider trading scandal.
The mandated banks invited other banks playing lesser roles in the sale at Tuesday's meeting, which was called to inform them of the planned schedule for the offering, the sources said.

NEW?ORLEANS?- The busiest high school marching band during Mardi Gras will now showcase its talents in one of the premier national parades in the country.
The St. Aug 'Marching 100' has been selected as one of 18 bands from across the country to participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena on New Year's Day.
St. Aug's band headlines many New Orleans-area parades during Carnival, including at least one instance where they march in two parades in the same day on the busy Carnival weekend.
The Tournament of Roses Parade sent out a news release stating that it selects its bands based on:
"A variety of criteria including musicianship, marching ability and entertainment or special interest value. In order to be considered, band representatives submitted detailed applications, which included photos, video footage and letters of recommendation. Bands are required to raise all necessary funds for travel and accommodations. In addition to marching in the 5 1/2 mile long Rose Parade on New Year?s Day, bands also perform in one of three Bandfest events scheduled for Dec. 29 and 30, 2013, at Pasadena City College."

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The 2nd City Chorus will present its annual show entitled ?2nd City Chorus Unleashed? on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 7:00pm in the historic Memorial Hall, 211 N. Main St., Rockford, IL. The award-winning, men?s acappella chorus will perform a variety of songs for the audience?s enjoyment. This year, however, a significant segment of the concert will be dedicated to our love for ?man?s best friend?. Several very recognizable tunes will have ?parody dog lyrics? as written by our director, Joe Tomecek, and the chorus will be in costume for this part of the show.
The chorus is very pleased to have two quartets performing in this year?s show. ?Velvet Hammer? is our chapter quartet and is the reigning 2012 Barbershop Harmony Society Illinois District Champion. Our special guest quartet is ?Dominant Prep?. Bringing a new sound to barbershop, they are the 2012 Barbershop Harmony Society Central States District Champions and fourth place winners at the Society?s International Collegiate Contest in Portland, Oregon this past summer.
Because of this year?s theme, 2nd City Chorus and the PAWS Humane Society have developed a collaborative partnership. The chorus recently performed at the PAWS?s ?Fur Ball? fundraiser, and that organization will be the recipient of a percentage of our show?s proceeds. Additionally, if attendees donate money or pet food to PAWS that night, they will be eligible for a special prize drawing.
To top off the evening, an ?afterglow? will take place immediately after the concert in the same hall. This will consist of the chorus and chapter quartets performing a couple of numbers followed by a longer set by the guest quartet. Appetizers, desserts, coffee and a cash bar will be available.
Tickets are $15.00 for the show and $5.00 for the ?glow?. These tickets are separate and can be purchased in advance or at the door. Chorus members will be selling tickets, and for ticket information, contact Doug Phillips at 815-494-0112/dphill9285@gmail.com. For general information, contact Rick Schultz at 815-997-4526/schultz1077@gmail.com.

"I think it's to recognize the sacrifice and effort that the president's put forth and it's to honor them and the sacrifice that they have done and their families have made," said Nada Holcomb, a Kimberly resident.
"Well it's a tribute to the presidents of our country and what they stand for, it's stands for liberty," said JoeMae Stone of Twin Falls.
While many local and state government offices close in observance of "president's day," federal offices closed for Washington?s Birthday, a holiday to honor the first president of the United States.
"I think it?s about how we celebrate all of our presidents being, telling us like what we should do and controlling all of our government stuff," said student Tiffany Bryant.
To make the holiday even more confusing, Washington?s Birthday isn't until February 22nd. But in 1979, congress passed the uniform Monday holiday act. That means Washington?s Birthday will be celebrated as a national holiday on the third Monday of February. President's day, Washington?s Birthday, whatever the holiday might be.....for some?
"I'd rather be in school because like, I just like, really like school and I never want to be out of school," said Tiffany Bryant.
A day nonetheless intended to honor all past presidents of the United States.

Police in Singapore have warned men to be more careful regarding to whom they talk using webcams, reporting an alarming increase in the number of men who've been lured into nude conversations with "foreign" women, only to be blackmailed with video-chat recordings.
In terms of sheer numbers, the increase isn't much ? from 11 incidents in 2011 to more than 50 last year ? but it suggests a burgeoning scam that could ensnare many more men in the future, the national police force said in a bulletin that was first reported by Singapore's Straits Times newspaper.
Police singled out Facebook and Tagged as especially popular vehicles for the extortion scheme, in which "female foreign suspects ... would commence a webcam conversation with the victims and initiate cybersex by undressing themselves first before persuading the male victims to appear nude or perform sexual acts in front of the webcams."
"Unknown to the victims, the suspects had recorded the acts," police said. "These suspects would then threaten to circulate compromising photographs and videos of the victims to extort money from them."
The spike in cases was first noted halfway through last year, leading Crimewatch, a joint program of the national police and the National Crime Prevention Council, to "re-create" the scam in a (safe for work but entertainingly cheesy) video in June.
Graham Cluley, a consultant with the Internet security firm Sophos, reported the bulletin Monday on the company's appropriately named Naked Security blog and warned of another potential hazard:
You can imagine how a man, believing he is being seduced online by a sexy woman, might be all too eager to click on a link she suggests or run a malicious program on his computer. Before he knows it, his computer could be under the control of a hacker.

Ghosts, monsters, the bogeyman ? these are the nightly torments of small children everywhere.
The majority of youngsters experience some form of nighttime fears: fear of nighttime separation, fear of the dark or scary dreams. While most kids tend to outgrow these fears as they age, some children develop severe nighttime phobias. Kids who suffer these severe jitters at night have a harder time distinguishing fantasy from reality, a new study finds.
The study involved 80 children ages 4 to 6 who experienced severe nighttime fears (50 boys and 30 girls) compared with 32 normal children without such fears (18 boys and 14 girls). Researchers interviewed the children and their parents individually to gauge the kids' level of fear.
In the children's interviews, researchers read the kids a brief picture-book story that set the mood for kids to talk about their fears. The parents were asked about the content of their children's nighttime fears as well as how often and severe those fears were. [What Really Scares People: Top 10 Phobias]
Children were given the "Koala Fear Questionnaire," in which they had to rate their fear of scary pictures on a scale of Koala bears depicting different levels of fear. Parents were given another questionnaire asking them to rate their children's fear levels.
The kids were also shown images of real or mythical beings and situations and asked to decide whether the subjects were imaginary or could occur in real life. For example, for mythical figures like a fairy or Bob the Builder, the researchers might ask questions like: "Do you think this fairy can come to your home?" or "Do you think you could see this fairy in a movie or on TV?" The kids also were asked to distinguish between real and fantasy situations, such as "burglars breaking into the house," or "a monster frightening a child in the dark."
Kids who experienced nighttime fears had a harder time making fantasy-reality distinctions than the other kids, the study revealed. The findings suggest a developmental delay in nighttime fear sufferers, the researchers say. In addition, younger children had a harder time at the fantasy-reality task than older ones, showing that the ability improves with age.
Children who have more difficulty separating fact from fiction may be more prone to nighttime fears, the researchers propose. Alternatively, kids who have more nighttime fears might be more likely to confuse fantasy and reality.
The results of the study, which appeared in the February issue of the journal Child Psychiatry & Human Development, have important clinical implications for overcoming nighttime fears, the researchers say. For instance, therapists could work on the underlying problem of separating fact from fiction.

Last weekend, Brian and I did a quick overnight trip inPhiladelphia. I bought a Groupon special for the Sonesta Hotel at 18th & Market, and we used it as a chance to unwind, try a few new restaurants, and just get some sleep. It was my first experience at the Sonesta. The location was great, the room was clean and quiet, the bed was very comfortable, and the checkout time was noon ? which makes such a wonderful world of difference from an 11am checkout time. I would have liked a larger bathroom (or at least a larger bathtub), but the room itself was a nice size. I?d stay there again.
One of our goals this year is to hit as many of the Philadelphia Magazine top 50 restaurants in Philadelphia. We figure it will force us to try some new places instead of always going to our favorites. But, as we learned over the weekend, sometimes your favorites are your favorites for a reason. Where did we hit?
We were put in a back room where the sun was shining through the windows. Although we loved the food, we weren?t crazy about the atmosphere in that back room. Maybe if we had been in the main bar area, we would have stuck around after eating, but honestly, the atmosphere just wasn?t one that said, sit, pull out your iPads, and drink the afternoon away. So we left after eating and headed off to find somewhere to continue our culinary adventures. (And we decided we?ll need to give the place a second chance sometime but definitely sit in the bar area.)
As we work our way through the top 50 restaurants, I?ll tell you about them and focus on the ones that source food and drink locally.
(I?m having some problems with the formatting of this post ? sorry for the long paragraphs)
