Afghan kids tell of massacre by lone US soldier

Handout / Reuters

TACOMA, Washington - An Afghan villager and two of his sons, who survived a night-time shooting rampage in March, testified on Saturday that they saw only one U.S. soldier attacking their compound, backing the U.S. government's account.

A teenager said he had cried out "We are children, we are children" during the attack, but then saw the soldier shoot a child.

Military prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, accusing him of killing 16 villagers, mostly women and children, when he ventured out of his remote camp on two revenge-fueled forays over a five-hour period in March.

The shootings in Afghanistan's Kandahar province marked the worst case of civilian slaughter blamed on an individual U.S. soldier since the Vietnam War and damaged already strained U.S.-Afghan relations.

The U.S. government says a coherent and lucid Bales acted alone and with "chilling premeditation."

Some villagers told reporters shortly after the attacks that more than one U.S. soldier was involved, but sworn statements to that effect have not been made publicly.

Witness: Sgt. Bales, accused of Afghan massacre, was deemed a top soldier

Karilyn Bales, the wife of Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, spoke exclusively with NBC's Matt Lauer, telling the TODAY anchor that the news about her husband is 'very unbelievable.'

Early Saturday, three survivors answered questions via video-link from Kandahar Air Field to a hearing at a U.S. Army base in Washington state - the first time Afghan witnesses have testified under oath about what transpired on March 11.

"He shot me right here," said Haji Mohamed Naim, the father of nine sons in the village of Alkozai, the scene of the first shootings.

Speaking through an interpreter, he said all he could see was a strong light on the head of a soldier who was not more than half a yard away from him when he started shooting.

Naim said he was awoken in the night by sounds of shots and dogs barking, and then children from the next door house knocked on his door. He then described how an "American" jumped from a wall before confronting him and starting to shoot.

Two of Naim's sons, who were also in the compound, said they saw only one U.S. soldier on the night in question.

"Yes, I saw him, he came after me, I went to another room," said Naim's son Sadiquallah, who said he was 13 or 14 years old. He described how he hid behind a curtain in a storage room with one other child, and was hit in the ear with a bullet, but did not see who fired the shot.

"How many Americans did you see?" one of the prosecution attorneys asked Sadiquallah. "One," he replied.

'I saw the American'
His older brother Quadratullah, who said he was 14, was unscathed in the attack, but said he saw a U.S. soldier shooting other children.

"Yes I saw the American," he answered a government attorney. "I said 'We are children, we are children', and he shot one of the kids," Quadratullah said, through an interpreter.

"We saw only one American," he added.

At a courtroom at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Bales sat impassively throughout the proceedings, watching the witnesses on a TV screen in front of him.

The Afghan villagers testified on the fifth day of a hearing to establish whether there is enough evidence to put Bales before a court martial.

A veteran of four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Bales faces 16 counts of premeditated murder and six counts of attempted murder, as well as charges of assault and wrongfully possessing and using steroids and alcohol while deployed.

Prosecutors have presented physical evidence to tie Bales to the crime scene, with a forensic investigator saying a sample of blood on Bales' clothes matched a swab taken in one of the compounds where the shooting occurred.

Bales' lawyers have not set out an alternative theory, but have pointed up inconsistencies in testimony and highlighted incidents before the shooting where Bales lost his temper easily or appeared unbalanced, possibly setting up an argument that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Gathering evidence and witness statements was complicated by the speedy burial of victims, the inability of U.S. investigators to access the crime scenes for three weeks after the violence for fears of revenge attacks, and the dispersal of possible witnesses after treatment at a Kandahar hospital.

Bales' lead civil defense attorney John Henry Browne, who is in Kandahar to question the witnesses, complained early in the investigation that his team was denied access to villagers wounded in the attacks.

MBNation's 3rd East vs. West Showcase basketball games set for ...

SACO, Maine ? State championship team members Garet Beal of Jonesport-Beals High School, Krystal Kingsbury of Presque Isle, Allie Clement of McAuley of Portland and McKenzie Worcester of Washburn are among the more than 175 basketball players who have confirmed they plan to participate in the third annual MBNation East vs. West Showcase on Sunday.

The daylong event at the Saco Recreation Center is conducted by MBNation Basketball and showcases the talents of the state?s top players.

?This has, literally, become a preseason all-star game,? said MBNation club director Mike Woodbury of the contests.

More than 200 players were invited to participate and the final tally of who attends will be close to 180, according to Woodbury.

?It gets bigger every year,? he said.

He also expects to have between 30 and 50 men?s and women?s coaches, plus a couple of organizations that evaluate the players? potential and rank them for recruiting purposes.

Some may have already committed to a school. Beal, for instance, verbally committed to the University of Maine on Tuesday. Most have not committed yet, such as Chris Braley, a Newport native now attending Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H., who is also considered to be an NCAA Division I basketball prospect.

The day consists of seven games scheduled to be put on starting at 9 a.m., five boys games and two girls games, primarily for high school-age players.

The boys are split into four games based on high school graduation class (2013-16) plus a futures game for boys who are expected to graduate in either 2017 or 2018. Girls games may be split among two age groups, one game for the 2013 and 2014 graduating classes and the other for the 2015 and 2016 classes.

There is no breakdown into classes based on the size of the schools the players attend.

?We just tried to find the best players regardless of class,? Woodbury said. Players are coming from as far north as Caribou and as far south as York.

Some who have accepted their invitations may not be able to play, however, because of injury or other commitments.

?We don?t allow them to participate if they?re still in season for their high school sport [such as football],? said Woodbury.

The admission fee is $5 per person, but that covers all the games. The players? registration fee is $55.

Woodbury is excited because this year?s gathering is in the newly renovated Saco Recreation Center after two years at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland.

?They?ve put in a new gymnasium floor and it has more seating. And they?re bringing in extra seating,? Woodbury said of the Saco center, which will have a capacity of about 600. The center also has a concessions stand with hot food, an activity room for the players and a hospitality room for the college coaches.

The extra seating probably will be necessary, according to Woodbury.

?I expect that it will be standing-room-only for the games in the middle of the day,? he said. Those are boys games with this year?s juniors playing at 12:45 p.m. and the seniors at 2 p.m.

The futures game is first at 9 a.m. followed by the freshman boys (10:15 a.m.) and sophomore boys (11:30 a.m.).

The freshman and sophomore girls play at 3:15 p.m. followed by the junior and senior girls at 4:30 p.m. The girls games may be combined into one, however, based on the confirmation rate, Woodbury said. Fourteen girls from Western Maine and 17 from Eastern Maine have confirmed, and Woodbury prefers to have 12-player teams.

Other boys taking part include Sam Grindle of Deer Isle-Stonington, a standout guard who also won the state Class C boys individual golf title last month; Tyler Norris of EM Class A champion Hampden Academy; Thiwat Thiwat and Labson Abwoch of state Class A champ Deering of Portland; Brendan Newcomb of Brewer; Ben Walls of Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor; Nick Guiod and Kyle Bouchard of Houlton; Ben Hughes of Bangor; Mitch Worcester of Washburn; and Isaiah Stone-Patterson of Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston.

Among the other girls who have accepted invitations are Sydney and Sarah Hancock of Lake Region of Naples, Kelsie and Kylie Richards of Nokomis of Newport, Kennadi Grover of Oceanside, Jillian Woodward of Orono and Lexi Nelligan of Belfast.

The list of committed players can be found at the MBNation website at: thenationbasketball.yuku.com/topic/2468/3rd-Annual-MBNation-East-v-West-Showcase-Info?Invite-List.

Woodbury is expecting that the games will be competitive.

?This is a chance for people who might not have the opportunity to [play against] each other during the rest of the year,? hesaid. ?Hopefully, they?ll all have a good time.?

Bishop wants to become King ? of martial arts arena ? GoNaples.com

Mixed martial arts fighters compete during a recent match. Seminole Casino Immokalee will host a King of the Casino MMA fight on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012.

At 47, Julius Bishop knows he is a bit old to be a mixed martial arts fighter. But with age comes wisdom. Which is why when Bishop climbs into the ring, he doesn't think of all the years that separate him from his younger opponent. Instead, he thinks of all the lessons those years have taught him.

"Experience goes a long way," Bishop said. "You know things they haven't achieved yet."

Mixed martial arts fighters from across southern Florida will be at Seminole Immokalee Casino on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012 to compete in King of the Casino.

So far, it's a strategy that has served him well. Bishop began mixed martial arts fighting two years ago. Since then, he has competed in three heavyweight fights and won all three. On Saturday he'll try to continue his winning streak when he faces off against Sergio Vela in the "King of the Casino" title fight at the Seminole Casino Immokalee.

The event is sponsored by Babe's in Fort Myers and organized and promoted by Pitt's Pen, a Lehigh Acres mixed martial arts school. Owned and operated by Mark Shopp, Pitt's Penn has been running amateur mixed martial arts fights at the casino about every three months for the past two years, Shopp said.

Although the fight between Bishop and Vela is the headline fight of the night, there will be anywhere from eight to 10 other fights as well, Shopp said. Fighters hail from across southern Florida, including Fort Lauderdale, Cape Coral and Lehigh Acres.

"This is basically a stepping stone for them to get to a higher level, to get them to pro," Shopp said.

Vela, a resident of Lehigh Acres, is a student at Pitt's Pen. Bishop lives in Moore Haven and trains at Big Cypress Martial Arts.

"They both have winning records," Shopp said of Bishop and Vela. "They both have been fighting for years. It's an exciting fight."

To beat their opponent, mixed martial arts fighters can use a variety of striking and grappling techniques borrowed from a variety of disciplines. Bishop began boxing when he was 32 but was later injured in a non-boxing related incident. After he recovered, he wanted to find another sport that appealed to his love of fighting.

He jokes that "anything barbaric" was always appealing to him.

"I always liked the martial arts and I just finally got a chance to get into it," Bishop said.

Even fueled by his passion for the sport, the training is demanding. In addition to working his full time job as a security guard at the Ah Tah Thi Ki Seminole Indian Museum in Clewiston, Bishop must carve out two hours a day to train. His boxing background means he already knows how to land a punch, but because mixed martial arts involves so much grappling, Bishop has added jiu jitsu to his fighting repertoire. That has helped him balance his skills, especially if the fight goes to the ground.

Even if Bishop never entered the ring, mixed martial arts would still appeal to him.

"It's good for exercise and for self-defense," Bishop said.

It appeals to many others, too. The Ultimate Fighting Championship, the world's largest mixed martial arts promotions company, was founded in 1993. Since then, the audience for the sport has steadily increased. Now, the UFC is considered the fastest-growing sports league in the country, with an estimated 31 million Americans counted among its fan base.

It helps that there's money to be made in the sport. When Shopp started fighting more than a decade ago, fighters were lucky to earn $500 to $1,000 for a match, he said. Now, top fighters can make up to $1 million. True, that's nothing compared towhat a top boxer can make, but Shopp believes boxing can't thrill an audience in the same way as a mixed martial arts bout."People like excitement," he said.

Bishop, however, is focused on the fight. He's training even more than usual to get ready to square off against Vela and admits that he would love to be crowned King of the Casino. After all, there's already something regal-sounding about his name, so it's not such a stretch: "Julius Caesar ? it sounds good," Bishop joked.

Yet it's not the thought of the title that pushes him to keep fighting. After he was injured, he spent several years in rehabilitation. The thought that he is now able to be "the older guy" and still keep fighting "is really incredible to me," he said.

"If you really love it, that's what keeps you going," Bishop said. "And I just have the drive."

In his 20 years of fighting, Shopp can only recall a handful of fighters who have had enough determination to stick with the sport. After all, who wants to spend eight hours toiling away at your day job, only to then let another person hit you in the face for two hours, he asks.

"It's one of the hardest sports in the world," he said.
